Ashes to Incense: Emancipation from Jim Crow The Story of the Rock Hill, SC Oratorians By Sandi Ludwa

In fall 2015, I began writing a thesis for my M.A. History at Winthrop, after returning to college following a 32 year lapse! It concerned our Oratorians and the huge impact they have made in our community through the founding of St. Mary’s. A er 1-1/2 years and countless hours of interview with Br. David Boone, members of the Oratory, parishioners and community members, and digging into dusty archives, the thesis developed into a book.

Not only does it record our Church’s rich history, it delves into the differences between North and South, prejudices, the struggle for equality through civil rights, and gives a personal view into prior Oratorians, such as the three Wahl’s (Edward, Joseph, Richard), and our future. The book is dedicated to Br. David and I hope to have achieved its purpose by providing this rich history so that the Rock Hill community, in particular, is aware of the impact of our priests and brothers.

Ashes to Incense is available through Amazon; bookstore.Xlibris.com; or through request order from our local Books-a-Million, etc.
